Semaglutide compared to other GLP-1 peptides Semaglutide is not the only GLP-1 receptor agonist available for research
These medications carry a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors (contraindicated with personal/family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2) and warnings about potential risks including pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, acute kidney injury with dehydration, and worsening diabetic retinopathy with rapid glucose reduction (particularly with semaglutide)
These include semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus), liraglutide (Victoza, Saxenda), dulaglutide (Trulicity), tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbounda dual GIP/GLP-1 agonist), exenatide (Byetta, Bydureon BCise), and lixisenatide (Adlyxin)
Therefore, elucidating whether the cGAS-STING-ferroptosis pathway is involved in RA-associated inflammation and cartilage damage and determining whether GLP-1RAs provide multi-target protection to RA by inhibiting this pathway, may provide novel theoretical insights and therapeutic strategies for RA management
