Lee, Front Royal, VA, July 1863 After suffering the defeat at Gettysburg in July of 1863, General R. E. Lee began the painful retreat back into Virginia. Prior to crossing the Shenandoah River near Front Royal, local merchant William M. Buck extended an invitation to Lee and his staff to share refreshments at his nearby estate, Bel Air. The good general accepted this offer and was entertained by the Bucks daughters playing the piano and singing.
